final free-choice project reflection 5.30.13
1. My free choice projects are both Hakuna Matata themed pieces. One is a picture frame like thing, and one is little soon-to be magnents. I used the white clay to make both of them. And each of them took me about a week total. I only had to come in after school once to finish glazing them.
2. I think the good or strong parts of my projects are their strong theme because they're tied together, and it gives it a meaning.
3. I think I could've spent a little more time on my first free choice project, because I think I could've made it better shaped and more detailed.
4. My theme of this project is Hakuna Matata because it means no worries, and that's one of my favorite phrases. I chose to make these pieces the way I did because I wanted my first one to be functional, and then I wanted to make something different for my second. I decided to do the magnet idea because I wanted to make something other than something that's like a scuplture or something that holds something. Details I added to reflect my theme are actually carving in the words Hakuna Matata, and on my one piece, choosing a certain glaze to represent the Lion King.
5. The important elements of my projects are my texture and color. Texture is strong because I not only carved in the letters, I carved in designs on each one of them that stick out. Color is strong because I chose a bright, colorful glaze to represent where Hakuna Matata comes from, the Lion King.
6. The important principles of my projects are my unity, and movement. Unity is strong because both pieces have the same theme, and movement is strong because my one piece has a lot of different parts to it that you have to look at each one separately to see the details on each part.
7. From this project I learned that deadlines are really important and that you have to have a plan to make sure you'll be able to get things done on time. That can be applied to life in really any way like work, other school things, and things like that.
8. The design process of this project was really quite easy for me. I chose Hakuna Matata because I really love that phrase and I thought it'd be a cool thing to incorporate into something. Once I had my idea, I just started making something and just went with it. At first, I had this slab with only the words written on it and since I thought the other corner looked empty, I started carving it out. After that I smoothed it out and decided that I wanted to make something that isn't like the usual things we made in clay this year so I decided to do the magnet idea.
9. My project wasn't really planned. I just had one idea in my head of the hakuna matata theme and as I was making my project, I kinda just went with the flow and changed things as I did it. Some challenges I had were how to make the empty space on my slab not so empty, and then at the end of the project, I had trouble getting my project off of the board it was on so I just let it dry and then once it popped off I kept wetting it down and easing it back into a flatter shape.
10. I thought that this project was worth while because I liked how it gave me the opportunity to make something other than a thing that holds something or that's like a sculpture. This summer I plan on painting my dresser and night stand and adding fabric in the drawers, and also taking a lot of pictures and such.
